I have a client who inquired about this “color coding” bookshelf craze that’s in just about every magazine you open these days.
My personal preference – alphabetized and categorized books (fiction versus non-fiction) for quick retrieval for the rare time I’m asked to loan a book. I thought it best to brush up before hitting her house in two weeks. My bookshelf, though organized for me, was a snooze fest, so defying order for aesthetic, I tried the color grouping. I like it. I really, really like it. Well, not really a Sally Field moment at first, but the bookshelf is growing on me. There is a satisfaction and even an orderliness that is appealing. I get it.
LEFT SIDE OF BOOKSHELF BEFORE AFTER
I can see my few accessories and mementoes better, including the groovy picture taken of my brother and me in the 70s. And my dad’s shriner hat – don’t remember him as a shriner – a kid would not forget such a silly hat.
The collage piece (artist) purchased for an, ahem, milestone birthday.
And on and on and on – I get more joy from these shelves now. But will I be able to find my books???

Hi there! I just thought you might like to know that your dad was not a Shriner. Rather he was a member of the Order of Alhambra – a social group only open to practicing Catholic men. From the fez you have, it would appear that your dad was the President of the local chapter at one point. It’s a very nice and piece of history and I’m glad you shared it!

I stand corrected Seth! I think I took liberties with my writing as Shriner slips off the tongue easier than “Order of the Alhambra!” Anyway, glad you found the post – thanks for commenting and correcting!
