Pseudo Refinishing

December 13, 2011 by carole Leave a Comment

I don’t like refinishing work, so I avoid it at all costs. PERIOD.

Thankfully there are many products on the market that allow you to “cheat” away scratches and other imperfections.  Goo Gone (see below)  is usually a winner for gooey, gluey kind of stuff, however, this time it didn’t work.  A cardboard box had attached itself “real good” (as we say in the south) to the side table and left a pretty rectangular outline.

It finally took scalding, hot water to loosen the goop, but still maintains a “patina” or “gentle wear” or whatever antique business buzz word you choose.  It is, however, a good-looking solid wood table with original hardware and brass casters.  Probably from the 40s.

my junior pickers found this for me at an estate sale…a cardboard box had left its mark

this chest needs some TLC, but not too much that you should be intimidated at auction or estate sale
great legs…just need a little buffing

Other useful products are Old English for very surface-y scratches – it comes in light and dark stains and can usually cover minor surface imperfections and Howard Restor-A-Finish (used with steel wool, you eliminate the need for sanding and refinishing – just wipe on with steel wool and dry off with clean cloth).  I wish these came in gallon size….

my go-to products

…and the “almost” results…after a little more elbow grease than expected on the side table and minimal work on the chest…just need to put some shoe polish (another favorite trick) on the leather and they will be good to go…

great by a bed, couch or side chair…need a place to perch that cocktail?

this small scale chest is perfect for foyer, bedside or side table alternative…great storage

Well, off to celebrate at a holiday party, first of five parties this week alone:)   This one is with fellow antique-ers…hopefully will gain some new insights and tricks to share.  Happy Holidays!!
