Only in Asheville Part Two can you see a fashion show entirely devoted to orange. The Asheville Area Arts Council picks a different color each year for its fundraising ball and this year’s appropriately entitled The Tangerine Ball. The fashion show, staged August 23rd, was a preamble to the actual event which will be a multi-venue, splashy party on Saturday, September 15th. If the fashion show was any indication then the main event will probably be definitely wild and oh, so Ashevillian. Everyone is encouraged to dress up in the theme color, of course. In past years there have been some pretty crazy shows of color and regalia. Here’s a snippet of the fashion show which began with warm up acts, a dancer and a hula hoop artist.
Some of the local designers had good lines and fit, but others were so-so. But I guess that wasn’t really the point of the whole evening. Finally, an evening of dance performances followed the fashion show with everything from ballroom freestyle, burlesque, modern, tap, and everything inbetween. The most eclectic dance I’ve ever seen, given that my daughter’s tame ballet and school performances provided no comparisons! Most of all, Asheville keeps me on my toes, forces open-mindedness and maintains my love affair with my second hometown.
