Inspired Design: Hotel Monaco

January 17, 2011 by carole 3 Comments

Just got back from D.C. for hubby’s annual “Christmas” party in January.  We stayed at Hotel Monaco in Old Town Alexandria…we stayed there last year and enjoyed it so much.  This time we brought the doggie since Hotel Monaco has to be the most dog friendly hotel I’ve ever experienced  AND no weight limitations…just ask the Romanian Sheep dog in the lobby.   Beyond the doggies, this hotel has great design elements.  Instead of the usual corporate, conference room, uninspired furniture that graces so many hotel lobbies, Hotel Monaco chose to take a risk. Vivid turquoise walls with a mix of fabrics, oversized light fixture and a faux leopard fireplace mantel to name a few examples .  It is not shocking as you might expect, but feels more like you’re entering a welcoming home where you feel the owner’s personality.

I love these banquettes that cozy up to either side of the fireplace…

…and I love all these other little places to relax and enjoy a glass of wine at the evening “free” cocktail hour at Hotel Monaco…

…the faux leopard fireplace makes me smile…

…even the check-in counter and elevator show the level of detail that went into the overall design…

…a “boutique” hotel with great weekend rates and close to the city.  Can’t wait to go back next year, but maybe this guy is happiest of all…

I went to Hotel Monaco in June to celebrate my first year anniversary with my sweet husband. I absolutely loved the vibe from the lobby to our room. I am dying to copy the design technique of using the wall knobs/curtain above the bed. I was overall happy with this place. Next time, we are bringing our darling pup.

Carole Marcotte

My name is Carole and I am a caring, efficient and passionate interior decorator. I help clients create stylish, functional homes that respect their past while designing for their future. After extensive research, I work tirelessly to blend clients’ existing and new decor into the overall design scheme. I love what I do.

My ideal for the design world in general (I can dream big, can’t I?): People will stop buying crap, refurbish and highlight their existing treasures and, if they absolutely need more stuff, buy only resale items (vintage, antique, consignment or the like). And if it must be new stuff, it will provide significant function, environmental sustainability or support our artists and thereby feed our soul. I am on a mission…care to join me?

My blog is a little bit decorating tips, a little bit travel, and a whole lotta love and design musings. Xo
