New Versus Old

May 21, 2012 by carole 2 Comments

Swung by “Tar-jay” for the usual pantry items of t.p. and cleaning products.  Couldn’t help but get sucked into their home decor section where they have feature collections that change seasonally.  I see the attraction…I’ve fallen prey myself for the little pretties and such.  It’s fast, cheap and easy…but what are the alternatives?  Can you sacrifice ease for a a little digging in a thrift store or antique mall?  Can you spend a little more for something durable and ultimately more sellable down the road?  Let’s take the “Tar-jay” new versus old challenge and see how F&F can come up with some comparable ideas…
nice, yes, but look at the patina on the older version…
old milk crate better
very utilitarian piece to function as a bar, or…
…you could have a real conversation starter with this old record album cabinet.
cute ottoman with new sacks, or…
old sacks at comparable price.
great outdoor lantern with style, but…
how much more interesting would an old ship lantern be??
glass vanity lamps…very sweet…but…
…you can find comparables at auction often for five bucks! Beat that tar-jay.
attractive modern ice bucket, or….
dare you to tell the difference with this 70s version…definitely cheaper at thrift store
great galvanized planter, new at you-know-where, or…
how about an old galvanized bucket or these lovely olive baskets?
need some desk storage….
…why not an old library card file instead?
grreat hanging planter…but…
…even mr. f&f appreciates the novelty of these old golf ball corrals.
great metal tray, or…
old industrial version?

Takes a little more work but in the end you have a much more interesting and collected house.

Thanks Eric – I’ve seen folks turn those olive baskets into hanging light fixtures – cool!!

Carole Marcotte

My name is Carole and I am a caring, efficient and passionate interior decorator. I help clients create stylish, functional homes that respect their past while designing for their future. After extensive research, I work tirelessly to blend clients’ existing and new decor into the overall design scheme. I love what I do.

My ideal for the design world in general (I can dream big, can’t I?): People will stop buying crap, refurbish and highlight their existing treasures and, if they absolutely need more stuff, buy only resale items (vintage, antique, consignment or the like). And if it must be new stuff, it will provide significant function, environmental sustainability or support our artists and thereby feed our soul. I am on a mission…care to join me?

My blog is a little bit decorating tips, a little bit travel, and a whole lotta love and design musings. Xo
